Task
1. Look for the document “Impact of the crisis on unemployment so far less pronounced in the EU than in the US” in the EUROSTAT web site. It corresponds to Statistics in Focus, 20/2010.

2.Read it carefully and then solve these exercises:

1. Explain the differences in the unemployment rate between the EU and the US according to duration.

In U.S. short-term unemployment remainedrelatively stable between 2007 and 2009 (step of 1.7% to 1.9%).  In the EU the same unemployment, between 2007 and 2009, increased but was below the unemployment in the short term of U.S.Unemployment in the U.S. medium-term between 2007 and 2009 increased significantly (2%), overcoming unemployment in the medium term EU, which grew but in lower proportion (1%).
The long-term unemployment (27weeks or more) increased from 0.8% to 3.8%. Despite this important change in the pattern of unemployment, U.S. still has an unemployment rate in the long run, significantly less than the EU (5.2%)2. Explain the reason that increased the unemployment imbalances across the US.
For the US overall, the current crisis has led to unemployment rates inching up towards the levels observed in1982/83 after the second oil shock. While all US states have suffered the impact of the crisis on the labour market, there are large differences. In general, states with relatively low levels ofunemployment before the crisis showed low increase in unemployment, and vice versa.
This has increased the unemployment imbalances across the US.  It means that in the states with minor level of unemploymentit increased in minor measure that in the states with major level of unemployment.
3. According to the EU and US data included in the text, say true or false.
a) “The unemployment rate in US atthe start of the crisis was higher than
in the EU”. False
b) “The generally higher unemployment rate observed in the EU in comparison to the US at the moment is driven by much...
