Causes
The cause of earthquakes is releasing energy from the earth's crustaccumulated as a result of volcanic and tectonic activities, which are mostly due to the edges of the plate.
Although tectonic and volcanic activity are the main causes that are generated by earthquakesare other factors that can originate them:
Accumulation of sediments by rockfalls on the slopes of the mountains, caves collapse.
Modifications of river.
Abrupt changes inatmospheric pressure by cyclones.
These phenomena generate events of low magnitude, which usually fall in the range of microdisk: tremors detectable only by seismographs.
Locations
Tectonicearthquakes often occur in areas where the concentration of forces generated by the boundaries of the plates give rise to adjustment movements inside and on the surface of the Earth. For this reason theearthquakes of tectonic origin are intimately related to the formation of geological faults. Commonly occur at the end of a seismic cycle: period during which strain accumulates inside Earth suddenly bereleased later. This release corresponds to the earthquake, after which the strain begins to build again.
The point inside the Earth where the earthquake originates is called the focus orhypocenter earthquake. The point on the surface which is directly vertically above the hypocenter, which thus is affected by the first shock-called epicenter.
In an earthquake are distinguished:...
