In 1870, Maria Estrada, an intelligent young woman of the Valencian high society; wanted to be a doctor. Supported by her father, Maria, cut her hair, dressed as a man and, attended to classes ofthe most famous physician Mark Ocasio, in AUN. Maria wanted to specialize in the discipline of Gynecology, and she did. Furthermore, she obtained the best results in exams and became agynecologist. Nobody, not even professors or students in all that time, realized her gender. Then, In 1875, Returning to Valencia, Maria practiced the profession, disguised as a man. Furthermore, she did itreaching a high prestige among aristocratic women. In consequence, her prestige caused professional jealousy from the others Valencian physicians, who spread the rumor that “he is one who seducesand corrupts men's wives." Even though, she was accused of raping two of her patients. As a result, Maria, in her defense, decided to reveal her true identity, her womanhood. Consequently, thisdeclaration aggravated even more the situation. Now, she had violated the law that forbidding women to practice medicine. Thus, the situation of Maria was worse because, it was punishable by death. Astatement that, fortunately, did not come to pass, thanks to the women who organized movement in which vowed to commit suicide in the event that the execution be fulfilled. As a result of this socialpressure, judges not only left Maria acquitted, although it allowed her to continue the practice of medicine, dressed and coiffed as she wanted. After that, the following year, the Spanish Councilchanged the law and allowed women to study this career. Finally, Maria, was the first woman physician and gynecologist who in 1899 won a Nobel Prize in Medicine for her ingenuity to performcesarean sections. Maria showed that women have the same ability than men to become a professional. Today, thanks to women like Maria, it has ben shown that ; women are the most efficient students.
