Half of Britain is now officially running low on water and wildlife is in danger
The government organisation that looks after the environment has added seventeen areas of Britain to its 'droughtmap' - meaning they are short of water.

The Midlands and the South West are now in drought, as well as London, the South East, East Anglia and Yorkshire.

The Environment Agency says water won't runout but people need to think about only using the water they need.

They warn that some rivers are running very low which could affect farmers and could last until Christmas.

It's been caused bymonths of dry weather and the last two winters being very dry.

Last winter, parts of England only had just over half the amount of rain they usually have at that time of year.

There are worriesthat the low rivers could affect wildlife in really dry areas.

In Southern and Eastern parts of England, people are banned from using hosepipes because they use lots of water.
How does thisaffect the wildlife?

Tadpoles this spring will be facing more than the usual predatory threats of fish, birds and children with jam jars. This is the worst drought in 30 years and "a wildlifetragedy"which could kill some of England's best-loved species.

The Environment Agency has warned that as well as the risk of tadpoles of frogs, toads and rare species such as the great crested newt, dying ifponds dry out, pressure is growing on water voles and wading birds, and fish are already dying in numbers as habitats dry out.

Agency staff have been removing fish from some ponds and rivers andplacing them elsewhere, but this action is not feasible at every affected spot.

Some once-common bird species, such as lapwings and curlews have declined rapidly in recent years, now they couldvanish.

Dragonflies and other aquatic insects, on which birds and fish feed, are also among the likely victims, if streams, ponds and shallow lakes are dry before their larvae form. And shrinking...
