Nowadays, the world is rapidly changing; for that reason, our society is getting more and more competitive. High-skilled people are so valued, and they are who getthe better jobs and work places. Washington D.C (1998) made a study about the reading difficulties in young children; and it is said that reading is essentialto succeed in our society, and this ability is highly valued and important for social and economic advancement. Thus, it is important to teach children to read well enough in order to be cultured,high-skilled, and to have good communication tools because the lack of reading has some negative effects in children.
In addition, children that do not read do not speak well; first of all, becausepeople in general learn words looking at them, using them, reading them. Consequently, if children do not read, they are not going to have a good lexical inventory. It results in the unknowledgement ofnon common words that can be found in books; and also the ignorance of technical, scientifical or specifical vocabulary in important areas that can lead children to misunderstand school books andother texts. The second reason why the lack of reading affects children is because people that do not read do not have good communication skills; for example, they may have low speech fluidity or poordiction, which is very important for children’s future if they want to be professionals in areas like law, education or journalism. They may also have poor coherence that can produces the disability tomake themselves understood when they speak; therefore, they can be afraid to talk whit other people because they do not know how to express their ideas correctly. In short, the lack of reading maycauses children unknow words and have poor communication skills.
