Conformity. Everything and everyone is the same. Conformity is the way that the world has been focused for a boundless period of time. In the novel the Anthem, Ayn Rand challenges this normal. In the novel, Anthem, by Ayn Rand, she focuses on the importance of individuality and the fact that the pleasing of a society and conforming, is not always the most important through the use ofdiction, sentence structure, and details.
In the novel, Rand's diction portrays many aspects of the theme. The use of the third person develops the society which denotes the individual self. In thenovel, the word "I" is an illegal word to use, and this word does not appear in the first several chapters of the book, in order to develop the society. This choice of the third person, where a singularperson calls themselves a "we", develops a perverse society that will not allow for one to be themself. This helps develop the theme of individuality, due to the fact that later in the book onceEquality 7-2521, the main charter, uses the word "I" once he separates from the rest of the society. Also, Rand's use of names such as Equality 7-2521 and Alliance 6-7349 helps develop the society inwhich the individual is not important at all. This causes the discovery of individuality later on inhe book to be much further liberating. This causes the main character to no longer use his givenname, and The Golden One never having a name like the rest, instilling the theme of individuality and a sense of self. Rand descirptively expresses the theme of self importance in the line, "My hands. .. My spirit. . . My sky. . . My forest. . . This earth of mine. . . ." (Rand 94). The use of the possessive pronoun "my" displays a sense of self image and an individuality that the main characternever has, until he separarates from the society. Rand's diction helps shape the theme in many ways, her diction shows how originality changes people and takes importance over society.
