(Mohandas Karamchand) Gandhi. He became one of the most respected spiritual and political leaders of the twentieth Century. Gandhi helped free the Indian people from British rulethrough nonviolent resistance, and is honored by his people as the father of the nation India. The Indian people called Gandhi Mahatma, meaning Great Soul.

Gandhi studied law in London and returned toIndia in 1891 to practice. In 1893 he accepted a one-year contract to work as a lawyer in South Africa. At the time South Africa was controlled by the British. When he triads to claim their rights as aBritish citizen who was abused, and soon saw that all Indians suffered similar treatment.

Gandhi remained in South Africa for 21 years fighting for the rights of indigenous peoples. Developedmethod of direct social action based on the value of the principles of nonviolence and truth called Satyagraha. He believes that the behavior of people is more important than what they get. Satyagrahapromoted nonviolence and civil disobedience as the most appropriate methods for obtaining political and social objectives.
