What is intelligence? What is it for?
A simple definition could be useful for example that intelligence is known as a general cognitive problem-solving skill of the human beings and also in some animals like octopus, dolphins, monkeys, etc. It is also known like a mental ability involved in reasoning; perceiving relationships and analogies, calculating, learning quickly, etc. therefore, and later psychologists maintained that it is more complicated and could not be determined by such a simplistic method.
Some psychologists have divided intelligence in different subcategories. For example one of the most famous is Howard Gardner maintained that it is compounded of eight types of intelligences: musical, bodily-kinesthetic,logical-mathematical, linguistic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist intelligence.
On the other hand, there are definitions like: Intelligence is what you do when you don't know what to do. Intelligence is a hypothetical idea which we have defined as being reflected by certain types of behavior. As we can see, we can have a lot of definitions but you can think on that intelligence is aunique capacity that humans have that make us different from the rest of the animals in the planet.
Well the theory of the multiple intelligences was created by the Dr. Howard Gardner; he is a teacher of education at Harvard University. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1943 (he is still a live); the Dr. Howard Gardner suggests that the common notion of intelligence and that each person hasa different intellectual composition, and that each person can learn better if we look for a specific way to teach depending on, let´s call it intelligence, that is because the Dr. Howard Gardner says that human beings have multiple intelligences, because of that; the Dr. Gardner proposes his eight different intelligences to account a wild range of human potential in humans. These intelligencesare situated in different parts or areas of the brain and they can either work independently or together depending of the situation. The Dr. Gardner says that we as teachers can improve education by addressing the multiple intelligences of our students. Also says that these intelligences may define the human species. These intelligences that he proposes are:
1. Linguistic intelligence (words andstructures): this intelligence develops the verbal skills and the sensitivity to the sounds, as well as the meanings and rhythms of words.Poets, writers, and public speakers are examples of linguistically intelligent people.
2. Logical-mathematical intelligence (related to numbers): this one has theability to think in a conceptual and abstract way, and capacity to discern logical or numericalpatterns that means the capacity to recognize patterns and handle logical thinking. These kinds of intelligences areusually found in: scientists, engineers, mathematicians, computer programmers, doctors, researchers, accountants, economists, lawyers, etc.
3. Spatial intelligence (pictures or visual aids): the intelligence that has the capacity to link and think in images, pictures, in order tovisualize accurately and abstractly the image with a grammatical structure or a word. Graphic artists, architects, and map-makers are examples of spatially intelligent jobs. The creation of this material has to be big enough and colorful in order to create a more symbolic learning.
4. Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence (a physical experience or body language): it has the ability to control one's bodymovements and to handle objects in a very skillfully way. Dancers, football players, and gymnasts are examples of bodily-kinesthetic intelligence.
5. Musical intelligence (related to music): this one has the ability to produce and appreciate rhythm, pitch, etc. of the words. This intelligence is usually found in: composers, recording engineers, performers, musical instrument makers, conductors,...
