Love And Depression

Love and depression. Surely you have experimented attraction feelings to a specific person: emotion, nervous, happiness, inability to concentrate in other issues, these are the signals of "being inlove". You can also have had experimented opposite feelings in unfortunate moments in your life: sadness, desperation, impotence and pessimism, the signals of being depressed. In our search ofmolecular reasons we have seen how many everyday situations are related with atomic and molecular interactions. Have the feelings of love and depression something to do with a molecular connection? Though theanswer is not simple, we know that sensations of love and depression are associated with certain molecules in the human brain. Love emotions are related with high levels of dopamine, norepinephrine,phenylethylamine and oxytocin in this tissue (the brain). Furthermore, depression feelings are linked to the lack of a molecule called serotonin. This last is a neurotransmitter, a substance thathelps transmit messages between nerve cells. When a patient is given reserpine, a medicament that depletes serotonin and other neurotransmitters, the individual suffers a serious emotional depression,similar to an important existential crisis. As our comprehension about chemical bases of Biology increases, we have learned a lot about molecules that make up the life. We begin to understand connectionsbetween physical & psychological conditions and molecules that cause them. Therefore, we can modify the molecules to fight dangerous and unpleasant affections. For example, depression can be treatedwith pharmaceuticals that reestablish serotonin in the brain to normal levels. Many medicines and drugs alter the physical and mental conditions, at the same time that improve quantity and quality oflive. Nowadays, an average person lives 20 years more than the average person at the beginning of the 20th century. On the other hand, some medicines have an immense addictive and destructive force....
