INTRODUCTION

The aim of this paper is to provide a useful introduce to the process of linguistic skills development, focusing on oral and written comprehension and expression, as well as, analyze the development of communicative competence in English. In doing so this paper has been divided in four mainsections.
First, I will provide a general overview to the process of linguistic skills development. I will define the concept of linguistic skill; review their classifications intro productive and receptive, the order in which they are acquired and how they are interconnected.
Secondly, I will analyze the development of communicative competence in English. I will define the notion of communicativecompetence by means of reviewing the contributions made by four of the most relevant linguistics in this field, they are: Chomsky, Hymes, Widdowsond and Canal & Swain. I will also describe how communicative competence can be achieved in the classroom.
Thirdly, I will offer a conclusion to broadly overview this topic and describe the importance of developing our students’ communicative competence inEnglish within an European context.
And finally, I will present some bibliographical references used while preparing this topic.
Having read my outline I shall start reading my first point:

8 DEFINITION

Literate people have a number of different skills. They are able to speak on the phone, write letters, listening to radio and read books. In otherwords, they posses the ability to speak, write, listen and read in their language.
Speaking and writing involve language production, for this reason are called productive skills; on the other hand, listening and reading involved receiving massages and are called receptive skills

Oral language includes two processes: oral comprehension (listening) and oralexpression. Both are indispensable because if one of them fails, communication would not exist.
Listening skill is the oral comprehension of the message of messages transmitted by a speaker. But we cannot say that it is only a receptive or passive process; on the contrary it is an active and complex process, because the brain must performance three functions:
– Indentify grammar, vocabularyand phonics.
– Select important information.
– Remember the information.
In the mother tongue this process seems automatic, but in foreign language it requires a lot of attention through the daily practice of different techniques and strategies.
Listening to English is hard work, special for young children. Initially, the listening in classroom will suppose listening to the teacher orCD- recorders with songs, rhymes, games, etc...
We must bear in mind that our pupils need to find a purpose in listening, for this reason; we must to consider the characteristics of our pupils. Moreover, we should build up their confidence and remember them they do not have to understand every single word. To build up our pupils’ confident we will teach them listening strategies, such as:
–Identifying the topic.
– Predicting and guessing in order to understand the message.
– Listening and reading for a general understanding/general picture. This strategy is called skimming.
– Extracting specific information or getting only the information you are interest in. This strategy is also called scanning.
– Listening and reading for detailed information, for example...
