Scope
This GBP provides information on managing and maintaining mobile equipment to deliver safe, efficient and effective operations. It is intended for all site managers, equipment managers,maintenance and operations personnel throughout Harsco Metals / Harsco Minerals. All queries relating to equipment management standards should be directed to your regional Asset Manager.

2 2.1

Safety at Work Methodology
Before commencing any maintenance work ensure that you have considered the methodology you will use to complete the activity. Such methodology should include detail of hazardsassociated with the work, equipment required, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), anticipated duration of works, isolation requirements, skill resources, fire fighting equipment and location of works.

2.2 Risk Assessment
Before commencing any maintenance work ensure that you have completed a risk assessment of the methodology proposed. While risk assessment standards and legal requirements may vary internationally, identifying the hazards and the severity of harm they could inflict is good safe working practice. Remember the hazards are those that may affect others as well as yourself.Some basic elements that should be considered are:

Oils, greases and liquids that may be used or be exposed. Containment and clearance procedures will be required Heavy equipment / items that exceed recommended manual handling weights and / or are irregular in size. The use of lifting equipment or assistance should bedetailed, including personnel positioning. Blocking requirements and blocking configuration as well as stability of ground beneath blocking should be considered Electricity. Isolation and lock-off of all power sources related to the item of equipment you are working upon and / or any associated (directly coupled) equipment that could, if activated, cause harm to the individual(s) carrying out thework Mechanical and hydraulic power devices related to the equipment being repaired must be immobilised / isolated and locked off Equipment should be secured from movement through the use of wheel chocks, props and supports. Hydraulic jacks and cranes should not be relied upon to hold / support equipment All pressure must be released from stored energy devices and pressurized lines before opening orremoving Partial removal of linkages and components may require the restraint of remaining components

Risk assessments should be exhaustive in reviewing potential hazards and the risk of occurrence. Steps must be taken to eliminate a hazard’s potential to cause harm. Each stage of the methodology should be considered and amended / modified until a safe working system has been determined.

2.3Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE is the last resort of protection. It is essential that the correct PPE is used at all times. These should include as a minimum: o o o o o o Hard hat (bump caps where allowed) Safety glasses / goggles / visors Gloves (Insulated where required) High visibility clothing Safety boots Hearing protection

2.4

Environment
Maintenance work can be damagingto the environment. The uncontrolled discharge of oils, fuels, sparks and other scrap / waste can cause both short and long term harm to the local environment.
