Introduction
Since a long time ago, students in Costa Rica have been receiving English classes in primary and secondary schools; however, most of them cannot understand and speak this language.C.T.P San Pablo is not the exception because some of the students cannot comprehend and speak some basic instructions in the second language. Why is this happening? Is the system of education in which the students are immersed, or maybe motivation in students?
In contrast to the previous paragraph, English teaching started in Costa Rica since 1995 in primary schools; in addition, it is supposedthat English classes have been taught using a method based on communication in which the use of the student’s mother tongue is not allowed; however, some students start classes in secondary schools; but they behave as beginners; moreover, most of them say that they do not understand what their teacher says; therefore, they want to receive most of the classes using their mother tongue.
What aboutthe English classes they received during the previous six years? Moreover some students continue with their English classes for five or six more years in high school; however, at the end of their program of studies, some of them are not able to speak and to understand the language. It is known that students are not required to understand every single word in a class because it is difficult tomaster a language, but they are required to be familiarized with common language in a classroom about a variety of topics.
1.1 Justification
It is known that the four skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) should be acquired by students because all of them are really necessary in different situations; however, it is important to know how to speak and to listen a foreignlanguage in different fields because wherever you go, there may be foreign people; as a result, they may need you to help them.
As a matter of fact, some students are not well motivated to acquire a second language; moreover, they laugh whenever they do not understand their teachers, and they say that English is just a requirement to approve a program of studies. Besides, they know that thebachillerato test is focused only on reading comprehension; thus, the rest of the skills are not necessary to get the bachillerato degree.
In contrast to the previous paragraph, some English teachers may feel disappointed due to this lack of motivation in students; thus, they do not develop activities focused on communication in the classroom because they say that some students are not interested whenthese kind of activities are brought to the class ; as a result; this situation must change and students need to realize that listening and speaking are a serious issue; consequently, they need to show to the English teachers how interested they are in this subject.
Since the beginning of this work, I have been wondering why some of us cannot develop adequate communication in C.T.P San Pablo;thus, there are some possible solutions to the problems mentioned here. As a matter of fact, my teachers may take advantage of their English knowledge in order to develop activities in which we can speak among each other; thus, the use of the mother tongue can be avoided in our class.
