Let’s see some methods!

Answer the following questions.

First of all, I want to talk about the grammar-Translation method: this method is not new; it has had different names, but it hasbeen used by language teachers for many years. “This method was used for the purpose of helping students read and appreciate foreign language literature.

It was also hoped that, through the study of the grammar of the target language, students would become more familiar with the grammar of their native language and that this familiarity would help them speak and write their nativelanguage better” (Larsen-Freeman Pág.11). As I said before one of its principles objectives is to be able to translate from one language to another and it helps to increase vocabulary and grammar rules in both languages as well as accuracy and translation, but to me it has some disadvantages for the students because they do not have motivation; this method can create frustration for them and do not havetoo much interaction between the students and the teacher.

Take into account my own experience I have to say that this method was the most used when I was at school because all my English teachers used to teach this way unless I did have no idea it is a method and it has this name, but I remember all the activities we used to do in class and I am sure all of them used this method and Ifind this one no too much useful because I think that when we are learning another language we need to have interaction with our classmates and the teacher because this can help us to be more motivated, to be focused and work very hard on our main goals. Because of that, I think that I will not use the Grammar- Translation Method in my future English classes because I think this method has thewrong idea of what language is and also of what make mistakes in the learning process are. Also this does not take into account the students needs and less their feelings. I prefer the communicative one!

The next method is the Audio-lingual Method it is an oral-based approach. However, “it is very different in that rather than emphasizing vocabulary acquisition throughexposure to its usc in situations, the Audio-Lingual Method drills students in the use of grammatical sentence patterns” (Larsen-Freeman Pág.36) This method take into account the behavior of the learners and this depends on three different elements the first one is the stimulus, then the response and finally the reinforcement and this method also has two different kinds of objectives. This method isbit similar to the Grammar-Translation because the dialogues are used for being repeated and memorized. Also, the students’ role is to produce correct responses and they do not initiate the interaction, and the teacher role is very central and active and he is the one who models the target language. As the Grammar- Translation method I would not use this one in my future classes because I think itis very traditional one and it does not have too much interaction between students-teachers and when you are learning a second language I think that is very important.

The next one is the Silent way Method it is a language teaching method created by Caleb Gattegno that makes extensive use of silence (Larsen-Freeman Pág.63)....
