1. Description
The Mexican wolf is characterized by being smaller than the common wolf (Canis lupus). Its fur has a gray color on the back and flanks in specimens of Chihuahua and the yellow orbrown in Durango, has a mane of long hairs on the neck and in top of the shoulders that bristles when they get angry.
They have strong legs, long tail, long and sharp fangs strong, thick skin, a bignose and keen sense of smell, the ears can rotate to help find the direction of the sounds, the legs are long enough to achieve high speed, while the body is compact for strength.
The Mexican wolf is asocial species by nature, they live in pairs or groups of 3-5 wolves called herds usually are wolves of the same family, but they can get to live and even to adopt wolves from other flocks.
Theyweigh from 22.5 to 41 kg. And length from 1.38 to 1.68 meters from tip of nose to tip of tail, and their height is from 0.65 to 0.80 meters.
Wolves live between 8 and 16 years living free and beyond 20years in captivity.
The wolf is a territorial animal. Adult animals roam the borders of their territory and defend it.
Pairing occurs during the winter or spring, depending on the region, and has agestation period of about 62 days, they are usually born between two and eight puppies and they are birthed in a burrow usually built under land.
