Challenges for the XXI century, scientists say, would be:
- Making solar power affordable

- Provide energy from fusion
- Develop carbonsequestration methods

- Manage the nitrogen cycle- Provide access to clean water
- Restore and improve urban infrastructure
- Advance the health informatics
- Designing better drugs
- Reverse engineer the brain
- Prevent nuclear terror
- Protecting Cyberspace
- Enhance virtual reality
- Advance personalized learning
- Design tools for scientific discovery

In the project's website statesthat the engineers have marked the progress of civilization throughout history, and that their presence and influence has increased since the Industrial Revolution, which saw the replacement of human labor by machines in countless facets. Moreover, in recent decades have been generated from engineering advances (automobiles, airplanes, radio, television, spaceships, lasers, computers ...) thathave improved every aspect of human life.
All these developments, on the other hand, have generated a series of unprecedented challenges. As the population grows and needs to expand, the problem of sustainability is increasing, as is the need to improve the quality of life. Old and new public health threats on the other hand demand greater effectiveness of medical treatments: vulnerability topandemics, terrorist violence or natural disasters require serious research to create new methods of protection and prevention.
We must also secure the future of the planet, which has limited resources with which they can not cope with the population growth. They therefore require new sources of energy, and also to stop and reverse the current environmental degradation.
To do this, we will need tomake feasible solutions, technologically and economically, and expanding the use of solar energy and nuclear fusion, and the full development of the methods of capturing carbon dioxide from the combustion of petroleum .
DISTRIBUSION WATER:
Another important environmental problem is the nitrogen. The biogeochemical cycle that removes nitrogen from air for incorporation into the plants (ourfood) has been altered by human activities. With the widespread use of fertilizers and industrial combustion at high temperatures, humans have doubled the rate at which nitrogen was removed from the air in preindustrial times, contributing to the emergence of phenomena such as acid rain and global warming . Therefore urges the design of countermeasures to the problems of the nitrogen cycle.

Also, the quality and quantity of water is a key issue. Its scarcity is severe in many regions of the world. The water should become available and must be provided in a sustainable manner to maintain the quality of life on Earth. New technologies for desalination of sea water might help, but small-scale technologies for water purification locally could be even more effective.
As for human healthrelated to water quality, there are still important issues to be resolved, such as the problem of malaria, requiring new methods and medical technologies. In general, biomedical engineering is pending the promise of personalized medicine: doctors recognize that each individual differs in the degree of susceptibility to disease and the responses to treatment, but medical technologies currently offeronly standard solutions. The recent categorization of human genetics and other advances offer the potential to identify specific factors that will determine their individual well-being or their tendency to get sick.
