MODERNIDAD Y MODERNIZACIÓN EN AMÉRICA LATINA: UNA
AVENTURA INACABADA

Resumen.- En la literatura sociológica encontramos diversas maneras de acercarse a la
experiencia latinoamericana con la modernidad.Todas estas aproximaciones responden a
procesos y fenómenos desiguales, dispersos en el tiempo y en el espacio. La convulsión de los
órdenes y de las instituciones sociales desde principios del siglo XX, acentuada tras la
Segunda Guerra Mundial, ha producido una creciente penetración de significados de la
modernidad en el tejido social de América Latina. En este sentido, la propuesta de este artículoes realizar una genealogía de la génesis y metamorfosis del proyecto de la modernidad en
América Latina. La discusión presente nos llevará a quebrar, romper o simplemente respetar
algunos límites establecidos sobre la posibilidad de la modernidad en la región y, sobre todo,
tratar de comprender la específica manera que tiene América Latina de estar en la modernidad.
Por ello, trataremos decomprender en clave sociológica la “modernidad latinoamericana” como
un proceso histórico lleno de determinantes y matices culturales, económicos, políticos y
sociales. Esto nos hará privilegiar el enfoque de “modernidades múltiples” que abre la
posibilidad de pensar en “otra modernidad” para la región. El objetivo es considerar los
aspectos de la modernidad latinoamericana y, principalmente, encarar suscarencias, sus fallas
y sus lagunas, atendiendo las contradicciones que han guiado el proyecto de la modernidad en
América Latina por un camino particular, que la diferencia del resto de las sociedades
occidentales.

Abstract.- In the sociological literature we find diverse ways of approaching theLatin-American
experience with the modernity. All these approximations answer to processes and unequal,
dispersed phenomena in the time and in the space. The convulsion of the orders and of the
social institutions from beginning of the 20th century, accentuated after the Second World war,
has produced an increasing penetration of meanings of the modernity in the social fabric of
Latin America. In thisrespect, the offer of this article is to realize a genealogy of the genesis
and metamorphosis of the project of the modernity in Latin America. The discussion presents it
will lead us to failing, to break or simply to respect some limits established on the possibility of
the modernity in the region and, especially, to try to understand the specific way that has Latin
America of being in themodernity. For it, we will try to understand in sociological key the “LatinAmerican modernity” as a historical process full of determinants and cultural, economic, political
and social shades. This will make us favour the approach of “multiple modernity” that opens the
possibility of thinking about “another modernity” for the region. The aim is to consider the
aspects of the Latin-American modernityand, principally, to face its lacks, its faults and its
lagoons, attending to the contradictions that have guided the project of the modernity in Latin
America for a particular way, that the difference of the rest of the western societies.
