MSF

MSF is the abbreviation known all over the world as Doctors without borders, an international medical humanitarian organization that provides assistance to people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, or natural disaster, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation.

The organization is created out of nonconformity of a group of doctors and journalists dissatisfied with the silence and the inefficiency of the international help provided in Biafra (Nigeria) and Oriental Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Their spirit: preserve the essence of independent medical action in emergencies.Medical care and testimony
Our independent and impartial presence in critical situations allows us to give immediate and temporary medical care to people in need. We put sanitary acts first, but we also take risks, we confront authorities and we use testimony as a means to provoke changes in favor of the population...

Independent Humanitarian acts
The biggest part of our funds comes from thesupport of the 3.7 million members and collaborators over the world, more than 445.000 in Spain. This financial independence allows us to decide where and when we need to intervene, without accepting political, economical or religious pressure which determines the help offered.

Help arrives at its destination
In MSF we control the distribution of help from its origin until its finaldestination. To do so, we have two head offices for purchasing and warehousing in Europe, and stock in other parts of the world for immediate emergency coverage.

Committed professionals
We have more than 2000 international employees in the field, who work with 23.900 professionals hired locally. Their commitment with the populations that we assist is the main strength of MSF. Their training anddevelopment within the organization, one of our priorities.

Transparency and statement of account
We manage resources that have been left in our trust. That is why we make statements of accounting, not only of the funds, but also of our achievements and failures, as a means to improve our work. Both the accounts as well as the projects are nationally andinternationally audited entities and are available to the public.

International recognition
Our work has been rewarded, among others, the Príncipe de Asturias de la Concordia award in 1991, the European council of Human Rights award in 1992, the Nansen Medal for refugees in 1993, the Roosevelt four freedoms award in 1996, The Indira Gandhi award in 1996, the Conrad N.Hilton award in 1998, TheNobel prize for peace in1999, the Zayed award for health in 2002 and the king Hussein award for humanitarian leadership in 2004.

The work of the different sections is coordinated by the international office in Geneva, two offices linked with the UN in Geneva and New York, just like other support offices in strategic areas. Apart from a combined, operational, organizational and financialmodel, all the sections of MSF share information, technical support and specific services through the satellite organization calls:
