MUSIC THERAPY

Students at Liceo Inglés show lower academic development than expected, most of it caused by their or other’s behavior in class. I think my project is interesting to the whole Liceo Inglés’ community because it is another way of making classes development better. It’s another strategy to improve the school’s mission. But, more than a way of improving the learning and focusexperience, the project may be attractive to students because they could see it as a less monotonous way of being in class.
The result of this project will be useful because students could improve their attitude in class without even knowing it. The effect music produces in them would help them stay focus and learn in a more profound and critical way. I think my project is possible because it onlyneeds a total disposition from the Liceo Inglés staff, and people who are willing to change their class methods to try a probably more efficient one.
The main goal of my project is to accomplish full mental development in students in at least one class. Determine the different attitude and behavior of students when working with and without music. Analyze the motivation of students when proposingthe idea in one class. The objective is to work with “problem groups”, which are the ones that have a hard time behaving in class, the mother group, in this case, would be eighth grade.

FRAME OF REFECRENCE:
“Who can benefit from music therapy? Children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly with mental health needs, developmental and learning disabilities, (…)”http://www.musictherapy.org/faqs.html#WHO_CAN_BENEFIT
“What are some misconceptions about music therapy? That the client or patient has to have some particular music ability to benefit from music therapy—they do not. That there is one particular style of music that is more therapeutic than all the case—this is not the case. All styles of music can be useful in effecting change in a client or patient’s life. The individual’spreferences, circumstances and need for treatment, and the client or patient’s goals help to determine the types of music a music therapist may use.”

“Playing music in the background while we are working, seemingly unaware of the music itself, has been found to reduce the stress.”http://www.holisticonline.com/stress/stress_music-therapy.htm

“What qualities should a music therapist have? Individuals who go into music therapy are typically musicians who have a sincere desire to use their love and talents for music to help others. Often there is an equal interest in music and psychology or medicine. (…) The successful music therapist is in good physical and mental health and has the motivation, stamina, and maturitynecessary for working with exceptional individuals in a therapeutic way. It goes without saying that a therapist has to be a sensitive and caring person who can accept differences in others.”

“State of mind: Music can also be used to bring a more positive state of mind, helping to keep depression and anxiety at bay. This can help preventthe stress response from wreaking havoc on the body, and can help keep creativity and optimism levels higher, bringing many other benefits.”

Music therapy stimulates several areas of the brain:
The temporal lobe, which is located slightly above the ears, contains brain cell which are organized by high and low frequencies. These cellsanalyze the information from the music we hear, such as the volume, pitch, speed, melody, and rhythm.
The inferior Gyrus which recalls memories in music lyrics and sounds when they are heard or sung
The Dorsolateral Frontal Cortex which is stimulated when hearing music to keep the song in working memory, bring up images that are associated with the sounds, and to visualize the music when...
