Chapter 2: Theology
(2.4) Nature and Names of God
* Define: polytheism, sovereignty, Theophanies, anthropomorphism.
* Polytheism: to belief in more than one “god” (Hinduism, Notism).
* Sovereignty: the absolute right that God has to do whatever He wants with what is His (absolute rule).
* Theophanies: visibleappearances of God, usually in human form.
* Anthropomorphism: ascribing to God human features to help us as simple human beings to begin to understand God’s feelings toward us and His working in our lives.
* (Liberal Christianity [Christian]: that which beliefs only in parts of the Bible instead of the whole book.)
* Understand the concepts of: Unity of God, Trinity of God, The natureof God (spirit), the two ingredients and three qualities of a person.
* Unity of God: the Divine nature of God is indivisible; share the same essence/nature. (God has only one nature.)
* Trinity of God: God is one in His essential being, but He exists in three Persons. Each Person if the Godhead (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) is fully God.
* The nature of God (spirit): The wordSpirit is the best way to describe the divine nature. God is not material; the Scriptures clearly indicate that fact. This means the He does not have a body and that He is invisible.
* Two ingredients: self-consciousness (“I am”) and self-determination (“I will”).
* Three qualities: intellect, emotion, and will.
* Find the Bible references for the Trinity of God.
* The pluralname of God (Gen. 1:1)
* In the plural forms of the personal pronouns for God (Gen. 1:1)
* At Christ’s baptism (Matt. 3:16-17)
* In the baptismal formula (Matt. 28:19)
* Names of God in the Old Testament.
* Jehovah: “the Self-Existent One” [Lord]
* Adonai: “My Lord”; “My Master” [Lord]
* Elohim: “the Strong One”; “the One to be Feared” [God]
* El Shaddai: “theAll-Sufficient One” [God Almighty]
* El Elyon: “the Most High God” [Most High]
* El Olam: “the Eternal God”
* Jehova-Yireh: “the Lord will provide”
* Jehova-Rapha: “the Lord who heals”
* Jehova-Nissi: “the Lord our banner”
* Jehova-Shalom: “the Lord our peace”
* Jehova-Ra ah: “the Lord our shepherd”
* Jehova-Tsidkenu: “the Lord our Righteousness”

* Theos: the Old Testament “Elohim” [God]
* Kurios: the Old Testament “Adonai” [Lord]
* Pater: no Old Testament equivalent [Father]
* Immanuel: “God with us”
* (The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and some part in Aramaic; the New Testament waswritten in Greek [Koiné– common language].)
(2.5) God’s Acts of Creation
* Define: creation, immediate and mediate creation, ex nihilo.
* Creation: the act of God whereby He brought all things into existence.
* Immediate creation: the act of the Triune God by which He brought the entire universe into existence immediately.
* Mediate creation: the act of God in which He does notoriginate things but simply shapes and transforms material that is already into existence.
* (In Creation God created something out of nothing [ex nihilo]; in salvation God creates something holy out of something unholy.)
* Who created?
* All three Persons of the Trinity created.
* God the Father created. (Gen. 1:1)
* God the Son created. (John 1:1,3)
* God theHoly Spirit created. (Gen. 1:2)
* The Trinity created the universe out of nothing (ex-nihilo).
* The basis of Creation; the creation vs. the Evolution theory.
* Both Creation as declared in the Scriptures and the man-made philosophy of evolution are based on faith.
