Unemployment was the only cause for people from “Generation X” to become depressed.
People from “Generation X” know of many ailments that people from the past generations were not aware of, eventhough the most common explanation is unemployment; they had to deal with many other malaises. One of them being the feeling of “redundancy”, they felt unnecessary and useless to society. People fromGeneration X were told to not be picky about their jobs, to never see them as the beginning of a life-career, because they could as well be temporary, this probably made them feel underappreciated. Theylived in a society in which people thought that people should be judged and perhaps “graded” according to their productivity, and since they never had longstanding careers and they were only hiredbecause of subsidies, they felt they were worth less than people from other generations. They felt like they didn’t have a purpose in life, they were “social homeless” as Bauman calls them. Generation Xalso had very clear divisions in society, it wasn’t organized in the same way as previous generations and that probably took away part of their self-esteem. All these psychological malaises were knownand suffered by people from Generation X, apart from unemployment they had to deal with many other ailments.

Even though the points illustrated by people who are against my proposition aresomewhat valid, we have to come to the realization that all those psychological malaises were caused by unemployment. Unemployment causes people to feel useless in general, people might feel that they arenot worthy of a job, that they are not as good as everyone else, and that causes a loss of self-esteem –one of the ailments that was supposed to cause people from Generation X to get depressed-. Acareer is one of the main things of our life, ever since we are born we are introduced n a society in which our job is one of the primary things to be, feel, and appear as successful.
