3. What is a Phoneme?
It’s a mental representation of a sound that has predictable variants. Each of the variants of that sound is called an allophonePhonemes are the different sounds within a language.
Considering meaning, using one sound rather than another can change the meaning of the word. For example.
The word rat has the phonemes / rᴂt /
If we change the middle phoneme we get / rÞt / rot a different word.

5. Voiced and Unvoiced
All the sounds produced in English are either voiced or voiceless. Voiced sounds occur when de vocal cords vibrate when the sound is produced. There is no vocal cord, vibration when producing voiceless sounds.
All vowels in English are voiced. Some ofthe consonant sounds produced in English are very similar. Many times the difference between them is because one is voiced and the other is voiceless. Two examples are “z”, which is unvoiced and “s” which is voiceless.
Voiced Consonant Sounds: b,d,g,v,z,th,sz,j,l,m,n,ng,r,w,y.
Voiceless Consonant Sounds: p,t,k,f,s,th,sh,ch,h.
Sounds maybe voiced and unvoiced. Voiced sounds occurs when the vocalcords in the larynx are vibrated. If you are producing a voice sound, you will feel vibration. For example:
The difference between /f/ /v/
The set of phonemes consist in two groups vowels and consonants.
Vowel sounds are all voiced, and maybe single or a combination.
Example:
Like /e/ as in let or /ei/ as in late.
Such combination are noun as diphthongs.
Diphthongs an additional term usedis triphthongs, which describes the combination of three vowels sounds.
Like /ava / on our or power.
Single vowel sounds maybe short like / I / as in hit or long like / i / heat.
Consonant Sounds maybe voiced or unvoiced. It is possible to identify many pairs of consonants which are essentially the same except for the element of voicing, for example
/ f / as in fan and / v / as in van.
