Platete Tonics
2. 2. Why do you think people didn't believe continentaldrift theory when Wagner first explained it? They didn’t believe the theory because of religion -people believed that god had made the planet. As well as this he wasn’t believed because he was an astronomer and meteorologist.
3. Who were the two scientist that brought forth supporting evidenceto Wagner's theroy, and what was their evidence? Arthur Holme and harry Hess. Arthur Holme published his idea that the thermal convection in the earth’s mantle could cause continents to move and Harry Hess’ work led to the discovery of plate tectonics.4. What are the three different types of plate boundaries, describe each type?
There are three types of plate boundaries: converging, spreading and sliding.
•converging: It is when two plates collide
•divergent: It is when two plates move apart
•transform: It is when plates move past each other in opposite directions.5. Give an example of a location on Earth where each type of plate boundary is present.
Convergent: This happens in the east of Japan(which is the cause of all the earthquakes and volcanoes in that area)
Divergent: The mid Atlantic ridge. Newoceanic crust is formed.
Transform: The st.Andreas fault of California.
6. What are the three different types of convergent plate boundaries?
•Oceanic-Continental
•Continental-Continental
•Oceanic-Oceanic
7. Give an example of a location on Earth where each type of convergent plate boundariesoccure.
An example of Oceanic-Continental: the Andes between Peru and Chile.
An example of Oceanic-Oceanic: Japanese Islands (Aleutian Islands)
An example of Continental-Continental: Himalaya mountains 8. Explain what plate tectonics and ocean trenches have in common?
Oceantrenches and volcanoes both occur where continental plates collide. An Ocean trench is also noted for the presence of a volcanic arc.
9. How old are the rocks off the east coast of North America relative to the rocks right along the mid Atlantic ridge, why do you think this is the case?Sea floor spreading is the process in which the Ocean floor is extended when two plates move apart. As the plates move apart, the rocks break and form a crack between the plates. Earthquakes occur along the plate boundary. Magma rises through the cracks and seeps out onto the ocean floor like a long, thin, under sea volcano.
10. What is a convection current or cell, describehow it works (use a picture if you want)?
A convection current is a current caused by the expansion of a liquid, solid or gas as it temperature rises .
11. What are the two main sources of heat inside the Earth?
Radioactive decay and residual heat..
12. What types of tectonic forces create mountains? The type of tectonic forces that create mountains...
