METODOLOGIA PARA SU EVALUACION1

RESUMEN
Se discutesabrela importanciade evaluar
la calidadde ejecucionde la podaenplantaciones
forestalesy delanecesidadde contarcon unametodologiaapropiadaparatal fin. La metodologia
descritaen estearticulo permiteresolverlosproblemasmascomunesasociadasa la actividad de

ABSTRACT
Prunning quality in forest plantations: evaluation methodology. The importance of prunipg quality control in forest plantations ,is discussed. The described methodology allows to solve the typical associated
problems to the forest pruning activity like:
have been there pruned only thevaluable trees
that will belong to the final harvest of the
plantation?; have been these trees pruned to a
height correspondingly with the commercial.
log sizes being utilized in the country (in Costa Rica 2.5 m length); has been the pruning
work correctly ~xecuted?;is there any need to
stop the pruning work and to take corrective
or trainning actions?; which is the average
knotty-diameter of theplantation?, or in other
words, above which averageddiameter will be
there free-knotts-wood obtained in the plantation?, and finally has been executed the pruning when the trees present~d a right diameter'? The continuous variables: Diameter at
Breast Height (dbh), Maximun Stump Diameter (sd), Below Maximun Stump Diameter
(bd), Total Height, and Pruning Height, and
the qualitative variables TreeSociological Position, Stem Damages, Tree Quality, Pruning
,Quality and Should Has Been Pruned?, were
all fully in detail described and explained. In
the second part are presented examples and
the proper way to analyze and interpret the
resp~ctive results, in order to be able to answer the stated questions.

INTRODUCCION
En forma analogaalas metodologfasexistentesparaevaluarla calidadde plantacionesforestales en pie (Murillo 1991a; Camacho y
Murillo 1992,Murillo y Camacho 1992),se requiere tambien parler evaluar la calidad de la
ejecucionde la poda. La poda en plantaciones
forestaleses una actividadde alto costapero imprescindible en numerosasespeciesy de granimpactoen la calidad y valoraciondel producto
final. En CostaRica, la tendenciade la actividad
de reforestaciones bastanteclara. Poco a poco
ha ido evolucionandoel sistemade incentivos
parala reforestacionhacia un modelo de credito
bancario,que buscaestimular la produccionde
maderade alta calidad, de maneraintensiva,en
unidades de manejo relativamente pequenas
(Murillo 1991b, Asamblea Legislativa...
