Poliomyelitis

Introduction:
Muscles in the human body play a very important role. Because their main function is to move and support the animal body, without muscles we’ll be like statues allthe time and we wouldn’t be able to move. Another very important function of the muscles is that they pump blood through the circulatory system and to every part of the body, but their maincharacteristic is that they have the ability to contract and relax.
There’s three types of muscles: Skeletal (which are the ones located around the skeleton), Cardiac (which is located ONLY in the heart), andSmooth (that is located in hollow organs). Every type of muscle has a diferent function even though they look they’re the same sometimes in their outside. This “similarity” in their surface can begiven when they are Striped or Smooth. As their names say it Striped is when their surface looks like if it had Stripes (which is given by sarcomers located in the myofibrils of each fiber in themuscle) and Smooth is when the surface looks smooth indeed. Talking about this smilarity Skeletal and Cardiac muscle are in fact, striped, while only Smooth is smooth.

This all structures compose everymuscle of the body, but sometimes muscles and it’s controller (In this case the Nervous System) can fail producing some diseases like the one I’m going to explain below.

Main Body (Causes,Symptoms, Treatment)

Poliomyelitis is an infectous sickness really contagious that attacks the central nervous system causing partial or full paralysis. Poliomyelitis is caused by infection with thepoliovirus (It is a member of the enterovirus subgroup. This virus is a transient inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract.) This virus usually gets into the body by direct person-to-person contact, bycontact with infected mucus from the nose or mouth or by direct contact with infected human feces. Once the virus is in the organism (principally in the intesine and the throat) it spreads through all...
