political system
The political organization of India today is based on the union of 28 states and seven territories, through a federal system. Constitutionally defined as a "socialist, seculardemocratic Republic" with a parliamentary system of government.

The executive power consists of the President, the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. The President is the head of government,but the real executive authority is Prime Minister. The president-in-Indian case is a figure that replaces the Queen of Great Britain. This means it has a rather symbolic authority and has very fewpowers.

The Parliament of India and has an upper chamber and a lower chamber. The Upper Chamber, also known as the Council of States, has 250 members elected indirectly and proportionallyby the legislatures of the various states. The minimum age to become a member of the Upper Chamber is 30 years and the term of office is six years.
 
The lower chamber, also known as House of thePeople, can have 552 members who are elected for five years by popular vote.

Laws may be introduced by both chambers, and must be approved by the two and have the assent of the President. Theexception is that the laws relating to the budget, taxes, and other monies, must be introduced by the lower chamber, and upper chamber senior cannot amend, can only make recommendations and return theproject within fourteen days of the received.

An electoral college consisting of elected members of both chambers of Parliament and state legislatures elects the President andVice President for a period of five years. The President, in turn, elects the Prime Minister, who is the leader of the party with a parliamentary majority in the lower chamber. Most central governmentdecisions are made by the Prime Minister, named, the President, who is ultimately the most important figure of the government of India.
