Chapter 1 Summary
Jonathan Harker leaves Munich on his journey to Transylvania to conduct business for Count Dracula. He describes the research he conducted previously to learn about the history, customs and geography of the region he is traveling to. On the second night of his journey, he stays at inn where the landlord and his wife express fear for Harker's safety. The wife begs Harker not totravel the coming night because it is the eve of St. George's Day, when "all evil things in the world will have their sway." Because he is determined to go, she presents him with a crucifix that she says will protect him. Harker is both bemused and irritated by what he views as the silly superstitions of these peasants.
On the last leg of Harker's trek he meets Dracula's castle. He getsinterested and goes to make some business with Count Dracula. From outside, the castle looks scary. It makes feel Harker something that he hadn´t felt before. He went straight to the door. A second later the door opened. It felt like Count Dracula was anxiously expecting Harker.

Chapter 2 Summary
Count Dracula welcomes JonathanHarker into the castle. He is formal and courteous, taking his guest to his room and offering him dinner. Harker hands Dracula a letter from his employer, Mr. Hawkins, who has sent the young man in his place to carry out the Count's business transactions in preparation of a move to London. After dinner, Harker has a chance to study the Count's appearance, which is remarkable for its"cruel-looking mouth," "sharp white teeth" and "extraordinary pallor." When the Count comes near and touches Harker, the latter is overcome with nausea.
The following day, with the Count away from the Castle, Harker explores his suite of rooms, including a library. He sees no sign of any servants, and yet his food is laid out for him. When the Count returns, he asked him if he had any kind of employment.Dracula tell him that he does but that they were really quiet. He also saw a group of women that give him a bad impression, but he don´t ask the count nothing about them. Harkers begin to felt that something was unusual about the count and his castle. And so far he didn’t know a lot of the count.
Main Idea: The first description of Dracula and his way of living.
Chapter 3 Summary
Harker decides hemust try to get Dracula to talk so that he might understand him and his motives. He must be careful and not let on that he is frightened. At night, the Count talks at length about Transylvania's history and his family's part in it. He is also curious about English laws. Dracula tells Harker to write Mr. Hawkins and tell him that Harker will stay another month in Transylvania. Harker has no choicebut to agree. Dracula gives Harker some sheets of paper to write letters. Harker writes letters to his colleagues in England and also, secretly, a letter in shorthand to his fiancye, Mina.
Later as Harker is looking out a window, he witnesses a bizarre and disturbing sight. The Count emerges from a window below and crawls down the wall. Dracula saw Harker looking at him. Harker tries to escapefrom the castle but all the doors and windows were locked. Dracula tells him that now on he must follow all his orders.
Main Idea: The first clue about Dracula that indicates that he is a vampire.
Chapter 4 Summary
Dracula directs Harker to write three letters to his friends. The letters, with their promises that he will soon return home, are to be dated successively, to arrive three weeksapart. Harker goes along with this, certain now that Dracula will kill him because he knows too much. Later, Harker secretly writes a letter to Mina in shorthand and another to Mr. Hawkins simply asking him to communicate with Mina. Harker tosses the letters, along with a gold coin, to a band of gypsies encamped in the castle's courtyard, hoping they will post the letters for him. Dracula, however,...
