What are Child Study and Special Education?
The purpose of the following document is to provide Spanish-speaking parents with a basic understanding of what leads to Special Education and what to expect throughout the Special Education process. The parents can see the steps of the process, understand the jargon of Special Education, and knowtheir level of involvement and rights with regard to the process. The hope is that through this handout, parents will better understand what is happening as they receive invitations to many meetings, and also know what might result from the meetings. Parents will also hopefully understand that they are an integral part of the team and that their input is valuable to the process. Parents areinformed that no child can receive services without their consent and that they are the ultimate decision makers. The handout can be supplied to the parent before any meeting ever takes place and then can also be referenced throughout the various meetings in order to help parents understand where the team is in the process. The simple diagram might also be helpful for those parents who cannot read,but can recognize some basic words.

1. Child Study – Estudio de Niño
a. What is child study?- ¿Cuál es el estudio de niño?
-Child Study is a meeting in which parents, teachers or other professionals come together to discuss a particular student and that student'seducational needs.
-El Estudio de Niño es una reunión en la cual los padres, los profesores u otros profesionales vienen juntos para hablar de un estudiante y las necesidades educativas del estudiante.
b. Who is on the Child Study Team? - ¿Quién está en el Equipo de Estudio de Niño?
- The team can have many people on it such as, an administrator (principal orassistant principal), the classroom teacher, any specialists that work with the child, a social worker, a psychologist, or a special education teacher, as well as the parents.
-El equipo puede tener a muchas personas como, un administrador (principal o principal de ayudante), el profesor de aula, cualquier especialista que trabaja con el niño, un trabajador social, un psicólogo, oun profesor de educación especial, así como los padres.
c. What does the Team do? - ¿Qué hace el Equipo?
- The team may decide to do a number of different things to help the child. El equipo puede decidir hacer varias cosas diferentes para ayudar al niño.
1. -A Child Study Plan may be developed in which strategies are developed for the classroomteacher to implement in the classroom. If the team decides to write a Child Study Plan, the team will probably meet again in 6-8 weeks to see if the child has made progress.

2. -The team might also decide that an evaluation for Special Education is necessary. If the team decides to evaluate for special education, then the team has 65 days to complete all components of the evaluation. An evaluation cannot be completed without parental consent.-El equipo también podría decidir que una evaluación para la Educación Especial es necesaria.
