Amongst Byron's best-known works are the brief poems SheWalks in Beauty, When We Two Parted and Don Juan. He is regarded as one of the greatest European poets and remains widely read and influential, both in the English-speaking world and beyond. He was bornon the 22nd of January 1788 in London. He was the son of captain John Byron and his second wife Catherine Gordon, descendant of Scottish King James I. Byron's mother Catherine had to sell her land andtitle to pay her husband's debts. John Byron may have married Catherine for her money and, after squandering it, deserted her. Catherine moved back to Scotland shortly afterward, where she raised herson in Aberdeen. On the 21st of May 1798, the death of Byron's great-uncle, the "wicked" Lord Byron, made the 10-year-old the 6th Baron Byron, and the young man then inherited both title and estate,Newstead Abbey, in Nottinghamshire, England.
