The Quetzal is a tropical bird, living in the rainforests of Central America, and is characterized by the beautiful tail feathers that the male possesses. It feeds on fruits, insects and smallvertebrates. Currently endangered, mainly due to hunting for feathers.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
The body length of the Quetzal, both the male and the female, between 35 and 40 centimeters, but the male hasa plumed tail length of 60 centimeters approximate average.
In the male green feathers of the head, give it a short, bushy crest, which shows her tiny eyes, brown. Its yellow beak is curved at theend and wide at the base, which gives it a flattened shape. The neck and upper chest are emerald green iridescence forming, changing to blue in some angles, while the lower breast and belly are of abright scarlet. The wings have a blackish tone and legs, a yellowish brown. The outer part of the tail is rich in blue and green iridescence while the inner part is composed of white feathers.
Thefemale least showy crest and lacking in long tail feathers. It has a gray head and a peak ranging from yellow and black.
The chest and back are green and red bottom. The tail has white stripes,black, and gray.
Both males and females are sexually immature when, present the yellow peak, back bronze and a lighter color on the inside of the tail.
The subspecies costaricensis difference beingonly slightly smaller individuals, feathers shorter and narrower in the queue.
HABITAT
El Quetzal, inhabits the rainforests few high mountain, found from southern Mexico to Panama (Figure 2).Rain forests are characterized by their high level of water vapor in the atmosphere, the tranquility of its spaces, lack of light due to a very dense vegetation cover, by always very green trees, topossess as epiphytes moss and lichen and other plants such as bromeliads, orchids and ferns, in some cases even up to 15 meters high.
