Absolute dating: a method of dating fossils in which the actual age of a deposit or specimen is measured.
Ar-Ar dating: used in conjunction with potassium-argon dating, this method gets around the problem of needing different rock samples to estimate potassium and argon.
Artifacts: any object made by human.
Ceramics: pots and others items made from baked clay.
Conservation: technique used onarchaeological materials to stop or reverse the process of decay.
Context: the relationship between and among artifacts, ecofacts, fossils and features.
Culture history: a history of the culture that lived in a given area over time.
Ecofacts: natural items that have been used by humans.
Electro spin resonance dating: measures trapped electrons from surrounding radioactive material.Features: artifacts of human manufacture that cannot be removed from an archaeological site.
Fission track dating: a chronometric dating method used to date crystal, glass, and many uranium rich materials contemporarneous with fossils or deposits that are from 20 billion to 5 billions years old.
Fossils: hardened remains or impression.
F U N trio: date bones and teeth. The greater fluorine anduranium, the longer the bone or teeth remain in the ground. Older de fossil, small amount of nitrogen.
Half-life: the time it takes for half to the atoms of a radioactive substance to decay into atom s of different substance.
Indicator fossil: well known fossils used to assign dates to rock strata.
Lithics: the technical name for tools made from stone.
Paleontropologist: anthropologist who work inthe field of paleonthropology.
Paleomagnetic dating: a method of dating archaeological and fossils deposits based on reversals and changes in the earth’s magnetic field over time.
Potassium argon dating: chronometric dating method that uses the rate of decay of a radioactive form of potassium into argon to test samples from 5000 to 3 billion years old. Dates minerals and rocks deposits.Radiocarbon dating: dating method uses the decay of carbon 14 to date organic remains. Up to 500000 years old.
Relative dating: method of dating fossils that determines the age of a specimen or deposit relative to a known specimen or deposit.
Stratified: an archaeological deposit that contains successive layers or strata
Taphonomy: the study of how natural processes from and disturb archaeologicalsites.
Thermoluminescence dating. A dating technique that is well suited to samples of ancient pottery, brick, tile, or terra cotta, which are heated to a high temperature that released trapped electrons.
Typology: a way of organizing artifacts in categories based on their particular characteristics.
Uranium series dating: technique for dating fossil sites that uses the decay of two kinds of uraniuminto other isotopes.
Allele: one member of a pair of genes.
Balancing selection: a type of selection that occurs when a heterozygous combination of alleles is positively favored even though a homozygous combination disfavored.
Behavioral ecology: involve the application of evolutionary principles to the behavior of animals.
Chromosome: paired rod-shaped structure within a cell nucleuscontaining the genes that transmit traits from one generation to the next.
Cline: the gradually increasing frecuency of a gene from one end of a region to another.
Crossing-over: exchanges of section of chromosomes from one chromosome to another.
Directional selection: a type of natural selection that increases the frequency of a trait.
DNA: a long two stranded molecule in the genes that directs themakeup of an organism according to the instruction in its genetic code.
Dominant: the allele phenotypically suppressed in the heterozygous form and expressed only in the homozygous form.
Gene: chemical units of heredity.
Gene flow: the process whereby genes pass from one population to another through mating and reproduction.
Genetic drift: refers to various random processes that affect...
