Hi my name is Ludwig Lindner, Im the current HR Management Trainee at the Sydney Harbour Marriott. Im going to be talking about the Challenges faced while Training in the hospitality industry.According Ursula (Ursula, 2010), who is the director of HR at the Sydney Harbour Marriott, there are numerous challenges to training and development. Such challenges include:

After working ondifferent departments and working my way up through the organisation. I found from my own experience as well this where the most important obstacles to overcome while providing a successful training.Measuring the effectiveness of the training – Measuring the result of the training can be another challenge. Even though the Marriott has the GSS survey that measures whether the guests are satisfiedwith employees’ customer service, it does not measure the specific skills and knowledge that the staffs has attained. For example, it does not measure the employees’ ability to handle complaints.The first challenge is Measuring the effectiveness of the training.Training faces many difficulties. Circumstances within the training itself are not the biggest question here. Measuring theeffectiveness of the training is something very subjective. It could not be measured in terms of productivity, for the employees where not producing before they attended training. Therefor as managers we canonly relay on GSS and the turnover rate for realising if the training program in place is working and if its the adequate programme indeed.

Cost –Hiring trainers, hiring the room (if off-site),hiring the equipment needed, employee wages and manager’s salary. Ursula also states that “customer never goes away”, hence managers has to replace employees (who are attending the training) with otheremployees.

Training and department training generates an immediate cost. A cost that is generated while people are training. Equipment, employee wages, and manager wages are the main costs...
