As a result of his meditations, Descartes concludes that one must exist if he is able to think and reason. However, this conclusion prevents him from thinking outside of hisown mind, due to his doubts about knowledge and his opinion of people.
In order to release himself from his own mind, Descartes turned to the argument that God is perfect. Furthermore, in order toreach perfection, one must be certain, and not fixate on the opinions of others. Descartes ascertained that people are all equally rational but, however, each person has different opinions and wants toarrive to their truth with different basis of reasoning. Therefore, Descartes’ famous conclusion of “I think there for I am” means that in order to think, it is necessary to exist (Descartes 32). Whatthe philosopher is claiming is that for one to create a thought, one must be alive. This concept of being alive and, therefore, existing, leads the idea from the body to the mind.
For Descartes, theessence of being human is that a human is capable of thought, and to think clarifies existence. He expresses that, in order to be conscious of our own thinking, this necessitates existence.Nevertheless, if thoughts exist then so do doubts. The famous conclusion, as stated above, caused Descartes to form the central idea of his philosophy.
The views of critiques influenced Descartes and causedhim to compare the concept of the soul and the mind being separate. In one respect, the body is the most obvious representation of a living human being. However, the soul represents what is inside aliving being, as is the mind. He concluded that, as god is perfection and is the creator of all, the people who are not perfect cannot equal him.
