What is the difference between a fruit and a vegetable?
Vegetable normally refers to the leafy green, stem, and root of a plant.
Fruit on the other hand are specific, they are the swollen (normally, but not always ripe) ovary of a plant and contain seeds.
A fruit is a ripened ovary, enclosing the seeds which are the mature ovules. They canarise from a single carpel, or several carpels fused together, or separate carpels.
In broad terms, a fruit is a structure of a plant that contains its seeds.
The term has different meanings dependent on context. In non-technical usage, such as food preparation, fruit normally means the fleshy seed-associated structures of certain plants that are sweet and edible in the raw state, such as apples,oranges, grapes, strawberries, juniper berries and bananas. Seed-associated structures that do not fit these informal criteria are usually called by other names, such as vegetables, pods, nut, ears and cones.

The apple is eaten fresh or cooked in a variety of ways. It is frequently used as a pastry filling, the apple pie being perhaps the archetypal Americandessert. Especially in Europe, fried apples characteristically accompany certain dishes of sausage or pork.

Cherry pits, and seeds from related fruits, including peaches, plums, almonds, pears, and apricots, contain cyanogenic glycosides. Your body can detoxify small quantities of cyanide compounds. If you accidentally eat a cherry pit in a pie or swallow an apple seed or two, you'll be fine. Actually, if you swallow several seeds whole, you would absorb a minimal amountof the toxic compounds. Chewing the seeds makes them much more hazardous to your health. Children and pets are much more likely to suffer poisoning from eating the seeds than adults.

The chief dietetic value of apples lies in the malic and tartaric acids. These acids are of signal benefit to persons of sedentary habits, who are liable to liverderangements, and they neutralize the acid products of gout and indigestion. The acids of the Apple not only make the fruit itself digestible, but even make it helpful in digesting other foods. The sugar of a sweet apple, like most fruit sugars, is practically a predigested food, and is soon ready to pass into the blood to provide energy and warmth for the body.
