PLATO’S REPUBLIC

INTRODUCTION

This work shows the belief in the existence of a close relationship between theory and practice.

It is "The Republic" an ideal preparation of a perfect society, but rather a therapeutic treatment of existing regimes, thepolitical thought of Plato comes to the disappointment that produced the current political theories.

In this age of moral crisis succumbs, the war time standards, they become public behavior standards, distributed and taught by the Sophists. The teaching of these behavior patterns will be based on power and force, threatening all ethical doctrine and causing an anarchic state in society. Platofought against those who are moved by the pursuit of power and wealth blaming the disorder and injustice.

Plato is convinced that rationality is the most important power and reason of man orders the cosmos, so that human life should aspire to the realization of reason and not the result of pleasure, and only those who believe in that supremacy of rational order could end the abuses andinjustices by creating harmony and social welfare.

This is an extensive work in ten books, described by many as a political treaty, something not quite right, and also to declare and explain the origins and consequences of various forms of state, also aims to investigate the man who creates them.

So that each book covers different subjects, albeit with the sole purpose of designing theperfect government and show the depths of man's being.

The first four books of the dialogue, address the problems that arise when dealing with the concept of justice, seeking to point out the most effective ways to achieve it.

The remaining six are focused on an exhibition of Platonic thought in its most intense level of depth.

Book I

The play opens with praise of the oldage of Cephalus Socrates. After praising the moderation, wisdom and sanity, begins a discussion about the importance of justice in the lives of men and to determine its role within the state. From this reflection is directed towards a search of their characteristics.

Book II

Glaucon and Socrates Adimarco encouraged to find and expose the true nature of justice. Here is implied in therelations between the notions of man and state. Besides presenting a lecture on education and its importance within the duties of the state.

Book III

This is a discussion around the concept of the state fair. Concluding that can only be obtained by a distribution of work and related education from early childhood in this way to prevent protests which may be a source of misunderstandingby the individual about the place it should occupy in society. A special education and requires members on the basis of skills that has been endowed

Book IV

Here ends the thoughts about the concept of justice, revealing the lessons learned and outlines the principles that should govern a just state.

"Producing is to establish justice in the subordinate parts of the soul thatshe has wanted to put nature. The injustice is to one side over the other an empire that goes against nature itself."

According to Plato, this principle connects the relations between men, but knowledge is only reserved for the most capable minds, so that the ruler must be elected from those who have it.

Book V

It becomes a reference to education as a starting point the idealstate, but now focus on children and women (the latter, if they can show capabilities for it).

According to Plato, the only ones able to guide them through the correct use of pedagogy are the philosophers.

To understand this, you need to know that for Plato, the philosopher is one whose capacity for abstraction can discover the highest good idea and bring to reality the ideal...
