Hard Times
Dickens's novel, "Hard Times" is set in England in the second half of the nineteenth century, by the time of the Second Industrial Revolution, where you can see reflected the life qualityof workers, their problems, in contrast to the high life of employers.
Thomas Gradgind is a man who is only interested in reality and serious things, never uses the imagination, has two children;Louisa and Thomas, who have been educated from childhood to his ideals without letting them use their imagination.
Gradgind had a great friend, Mr. Bounderby, banker and a important businessman in thecity, Mr. Bounderby explained that his mother had left him with his grandmother until he escaped, because she had used to hit him, and with little money made it to be an important man.
Grandgindfounds a school, and there he meets Cecily Jupe, a daughter of a circus man, and he convinces her to abandon her life in the circus and study with his children. Ceci didn’t do very well in the firstmonths of the study and she was tempted to drop everything and go back to the circus again, but she never did. She was tired of being wrong at school and making mistakes. In addition, Mr. Gradgind wasangry that she kept asking if his father had sent a letter.
Stephen Blackpool was a worker in his forties who worked in a factory of Coketown. He had an old and close friendship with Rachel, the womanwho loved. But he could not have a relationship with her because he was still married, eventhough he lived without his wife, who appeared drunk when she needed money. Stephen obviously wanted todivorce, but it was impossible for him because there was only one way and it was too expensive.
Gradgind’s daughter Louisa ends up marrying Mr. Bounderby, but only for doing a favor for his brother wholived with him, not love. His brother, Thomas, is a very smart kid who works and lives with Bounderby but despite being intelligent things do not end up going as he wants, is a selfish person who...
