Sainte-Foy
Sainte-Foy is situated in Conques,France.It's considered one of the bests pieces of romanesque architecture.
History:
The abbey was incited between 1041 and 1052,by the abbot Odolric.Itwas finished before Odoric died,in 1065.
The nave wasn't completed until the XII century,so it was finished in romanesque style.It was constructed in a cross-plain floor.
Sainte-Foy was a kind ofinspiration for the romanesque churches in Auverina.
The monastery is related with this five buildings:
· Basilicia of Saint-Martin in Tours
· Saint-Martilial in Limoges
· Saint-Sernin in Toulouse· The cathedral in Santiago de Compostela
All of these buldings are ubicated in the Camino de Santiago.And all of them share the same characteristics;they had:
· towers
· central and side naves
·ambulatory
The tympanum and the principal facade:
The occidental facadeof the church of Sanite-Foy,a deep archivolt in barrel vault exposes the tympanum of The Last Judgment (by Lochner in the 15thcentury)In the superior part we can apreciate two angels playing the trompet,we can also see Maiestas Domini representing at his right the ''choosens'' in the heaven and at his left damned peoplewho are going to the hell.
Behind him there is an angel holding a Cross,Next to him there's the Virgin Maria and Saint Peter which apear with a halo which are followed by some characters like:Dadon(itsfundator),Charlemagne(its benefactor).Below God is holding Sainte-Foy under a chain of prisioners that God set free.And in the other side we can see brave angels that arerejecting the condentatesfrom hell.
In a lower level we can see the paradise and Abraham in the centre,at his right an angel and at his left a demon.
The interior:
The interior of the church is suck simple:
· The vault is sohigh(22metres of hight)
· The choir
· The sacristy
· Stained-glass windows(created by Pierre Soulages) make the interior more confortable so the people can feel more cozy.
