A lecture room in any given university is built around a specific academic intention which dictates the physical structure of the room, the social construct inwhich is in play, as wells as, guides a conceptual flow of thought and interaction within a group of individuals. This space creates an environment with the intention to move knowledge from a primarysource (a professor in this case) to a secondary group (college students) who are held accountable to learn what is being pass on from the knowledge holder. This process can be described in the formof a cognitive activity system held together by the three physical, social, and conceptual aspects of the classroom space. The physical space of the lecture room is the first aspect that will bediscussed.
When you walk into lecture hall, Pepper Canyon Hall 106, there is a formulaic structure that can be identified as the foundation of a space for teaching and learning. The main lay out is asfollows. Walking in from the back entrance to the front of the classroom, we find ourselves at the lowest incline point in the room. This is a front and centered area dedicate for the professor. Thisspace is without seats and has a blackboard on the back wall. Going up the incline of the classroom there are seats aligned in columns and rolls for all the students to be seated. The seats are alloriented to face the front of the room and at every seat there is a desk for the student to place any resources for documentation of the receiving knowledge from the professor. The incline continuesup until the end of the classroom allowing all students to be seen by the professor and vice versa. This physical space reinforces the social space for there be to a flow of information frominstructor to student.
