Sipan
Every year you hear about new archeological discoveriessomewhere in Peru. It holds mysteries about ancient civilizations which we are still exploring. And the more you explore the more there is to discover. The mostfamous site is Machu Picchu, a lost Inca city, nestled in the mountains which the Spaniards did not know about, discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. But there is muchmore to Peru than the Incas. The pre-Inca civilizations were every bit as clever, had architecture and artifacts that were even more amazing, built pyramids, crafteddelicate gold pieces, had cities and palaces that are just being uncovered. Check out the new museum of the Lords of Sipan in Chiclayo, and you will realize thatthese pre-Inca peoples can compete in splendor to anything that came out of Egypt. These civilizations include the Moche, Lambayecque, Sicans, Chachapoyas and possiblyothers yet to be discovered. Most travelers are interested primarily in Cuzco and Machu Picchu, but Peru has much more to offer the adventurous and the curious. Therewards and sites are quite splendid.
Cuzco is the heart of the Inca Empire, the former capital of the Incas. It is surrounded by Inca fortresses and ruins, famous Inca walls, the Temple of the Sun, Inca towns like Ollantaytambo that have hardly changed over the centuries, and Incas, now called Quechua Indians, everywhere.
