Soft despotism
Soft despotism is a term Tocqueville created to refer to what he said democracy really is. He said, what we call democracy, isn´t really what we believe. When we talk about democracy,we think on liberty, on choosing, on our opinion counting… but we aren´t really choosing, we believe we have the control, by choosing our governors, by voting to approve laws… but what we really dois to vote for someone to take our decisions. It´s different to despotism (or hard despotism) because in this case, humans don´t realize about it, we guide ourselves to this despotism believing itreally depends on us. We vote for the governor who is nearer to our way of thinking, our ideas, and what we believe can be a better world, but then they are the ones who have the control, who choose forus.
We should take some things into consideration. The first one is, although we vote for a governor we think will do the best for our concern, we don´t share all of our ideas with him, so he willtake many decisions we will not agree with, although it´s us who have chosen him. Then, as everyone has been able to check through history, politicians are actors. They know how to convince us, theyknow how to talk and what to say, but that doesn´t mean everything they promise will come true. We could maybe choose one or another president because of his promises, and then turn out that he isn´tbringing them true.
We could take some recent examples from our society (Spanish country). One is: many people voted this year to the right wing, something that hadn´t happened so drastically sincemany years ago. Well, all these people who voted for this side voted expecting some ideas the campaign advertised. But when this government reached the control, they found out that the last governmenthadn´t left thing as expected, and had to take considerable hard decisions to be able to recover Spain’s economy.
