Abstract

This paper deals with the abstract concept of synchronicity. This psychological term that was firstly used and applied by Carl Jung refers to the events that coincide in time and have significance for the person’s individuation, therefore, meaningful. In this work, the possibility of finding synchronicities in the use of the I Ching was investigated and analyzed. Carl Jung haspreviously related his idea of synchronicity with the I Ching, but was not able to draw specific, scientific conclusions. That is why, this investigation was intended to experiment in a reduced sample of people in order to try and reach such conclusions. The hypothesis formulated was that “the phenomenon of synchronicity provides meaningful answers when consulting the I Ching”.

Afterexperimenting with students of Senior School y Florida Day School, consulting the I Ching with them, interesting results were derived. The students’ questions, somehow, coincided with the answers provided by the I Ching. What is more, these answers were actually meaningful for these particular students’ lifes. Therefore, taking into account Carl Jung’s definition of synchronicity and the way in whichthe experiment resulted, the phenomenon could be recongnised in the use of I Ching, proving the hypothesis formulated for this paper.

Nevertheless, after analyzing the results carefully, other factors were considered, affecting the reliabilty of the factors, which makes the hypothes not proven scientifically. Firstly, the phenomenon of synchronicity is so abstract that although a surveyshowed the probable presence of it in Florida Day School, there is no physical evidence that can definitely prove it. Secondly, the sample of students used for the experiment did not cover the entire community of the school, so no general conclusions could be obtained. Lastly, there are infinite questions that can be asked, making it almost imposible to cover all of the field that concerns thissubject.

Even though no general scientific conclusion was drawn, this work could provide plausible ideas about synchronicity’s feasibility. When consulting the I Ching, this book could provide meaningful answers to potential questions, hence synchronicity would be a fact, but maybe, due to coincidence, the consultant gives meaning to the ambigous answers provided by it. Again, the issue ofsynchronicity remains a mere mistery for our world.

Introduction
This work will study the phenomenon of synchronicity and evaluate if whetherthis concept makes reference to mere coincidences or significant facts in the application of the term in the I Ching. The aim of the study is to determine if the I Ching presents synchronicity, or if events in our everyday life are only sequences that take place by chance. The hypothesis then established is that “the phenomenon of synchronicity provides, indeed, meaningful answers when consultingthe I Ching.”
This topic will be analysed from a psychological point of view, making reference to previous research made by Carl Jung. All of the concepts alluded will refer to this Swiss Psychologists’ own principles. It is intended, however, to give further significance to the link between mind and matter, between the interior and exterior experiences, so as to give a new meaning to the unusmundus of which Jung talks about.
It is expected that this research will open new relevant questions on the issue of synchronicity, relevant for future investigations on the subject. This psychological concept proves to be of importance in our society since it tries to find the answer to interesting questions:
✓ Can synchronicity be an actual fact?
✓ Can it be identified in the...
