Acknowledgements
I would like to start by thanking Sverker Molander, my supervisor throughout this project for his help and guidance as well as for his part in the final theme ofthe degree. I would also like to thank all staff at Chalmers University of Technology, who have been involved in this Master’s degree especially Greg Morrison, Ann-Margret Strömvall, Yuliya Kalmykova, Gunnar Gustafson, Johan Boman, Anna Nyström Claesson and all the assistants and tutors who helped out and assisted the professors in making AEMT05/06 such an interesting, stimulating and educativeexperience. I would also like to thank Ole-Christian Øxnevad and Rune Pallesen at Seadrill in Stavanger for their support and of course for offering me the opportunity to writing this thesis in collaboration with them for which I am forever grateful. And last but not least, I would like to give a great hug to my beautiful girlfriend Trine Bjørnsen for her encouragement and inspiration.

i Abstract
An assessment of available technologies and techniques for oily water management and monitoring was undertaken in order to find the best available technology for slop and bilge water treatment on drilling rigs offshore. This was a result of Seadrill´s request of a BAT assessment after unsatisfactory experiences with the existing technologies and methods used today. Seadrill is a largedrilling rig owner and operator with more than 30 drilling rigs operating in all the main oil fields in the world. Most of their rigs are now using a system based on centrifuges which is used to extract the oily phase out of the water stream which not always is able to purify the waste water stream to the levels required by the regulations. This research project has identified several other optionswhich are likely to be more successful in reducing the hydrocarbon concentration while at the same time incurring less costs and maintenance requirements. The ones recommended in this report are filtration and absorbance technologies, in particular ultrafiltration and adsorbing deep filter media such as kapok filters. Another important recommendation made is the minimisation and recycling of thewaste water. Instead of treating the water to comply with regulation standards and then discharging it overboard, the water should be reused for cleaning the deck and bilge areas which will reduce environmental impacts and in addition should reduce cost as the need for monitoring of the discharged effluent or compensation in case of environmental harm would be removed as no oily water would lave the...
