The Ten Commandments
The Ten Commandments; an ancient and supernatural symbol of morality and justice - a code of laws passed down over hundreds of years from generation to generation. Why though, does this biblical set of moral guidelines and governing remain in a nation that claims to be non-religious? The Ten Commandments can be found in almost any business, government office, or socialsetting; if one knows where and how to look for them. With laws that touch on the most simple and moral of issues, however, how can it not be found in various settings?
Almost every society that has ever existed has created a code of conduct to govern itself by. The sixth commandment, thou shall not kill; encompasses the most basic of human needs and the most heinous of human crimes. Humans arenaturally social beings, in fact research suggests (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3XTHevPXDY) that early man had no other tool against nature than just that, cooperation. Humans have no claws, sharp teeth, or any other sort of advantage over nature, so why else would we last so long? Teamwork. Because of the old, with their wisdom to guide the young, because of the youthful and their strength, people would travel in groups, men, women, and children, because working together to tire out prey and then eat it on the spot was the only way of life. It is because of this group mechanic that taking another's life is so awful a deed that almost every set of moral guidelines or laws that has ever existed has included the taking of another's life as one of its key misdeeds.
With a social andloving nature human beings also need morals and laws that keep society together and in a prosperous state; therefore other commandments touch base on many other key points that a healthy civilization would need as a guideline to success and prosperity. The eighth commandment; stealing from another person, especially one whom common ground and bounty is shared with, would obviously cause dismay andanger, therefore this key law is also found in the commandments and many other codes of conduct across the globe. Rather than listing each commandment and their purpose, it would be more logical to examine why this ancient set of codes appears almost everywhere the eye may wander.
Within a government office of any country a set of laws and customs exist that harbor rules similar, or even identical,to the Ten Commandments. This is because, as mentioned before, ideals like murder, stealing, adultery, lying, and the rest of the commandments are so vital and unanimous in both their level of brutality and appearance in society that it is no wonder they appear in each and every set of laws across the globe. This is also why the same set of guidelines shows itself in other venues as well; such asthe business world. Like a country or culture, a business is also a community of sorts; thus it too needs a set of guidelines. With a never ending strive for the highest level of prosperity, businesses need a strict and defined set of rules to help its workers along to the path of capital and returns. Ideals like respect, cooperation, and teamwork are abundant in the work place, perhaps they arejust commandments in disguise? To steal doesn't necessarily mean to take an object. Lying is the stealing of the truth. Murder is the stealing of a life. Theft is the stealing of property. Adultery is the stealing of love. Therefore to not honor a co-worker through helpfulness in the work place, or to act criminally toward them, be it theft, violence, or sooth-saying; is inherently againsteverything a business would want for its employees. With employees that act against each other rather than for each other, the business would surely go under - this is why the commandments are morphed, or copied, into a social code for the corporate office, also bringing light to some of the "hidden" commandments abundant in all aspects of life.
