Good Morning, today I will be presenting the influence that media has in our everyday life. Im quite sure nobody has ever heard about Rosie the Riveter.
Rosie the Riveter was a propaganda first launched in 1942 by the United States government. The original purpose was to get women involved in the US workforce since factories were lacking of workers due to the fact that men were all going offto fight in the in WW2. The advertisement, (which is in the format of a poster), features a woman flexing her bicep muscles. She is dressed in a blue factory worker suit and despite the stern and almost tough expression she exhibits, the classic 1960’s feminine features are present in her appearance. On the top of the poster, in a large font it states “We can do it””. This ad encourages women tohave active participation in the workforce, specifically factory production. The slogan “We can do it” empowers and inspires women to be a part of the industrial workforce. This type of propaganda is created with the idea of influencing society towards taking action, or changing something in their society. Know I will present two brief articles that talk about the Irak war.
* In thepowerpoint I have an article with two different perspectives on the Irak war. The first one is from the Pentagons/government perspective, and the second one from a soldiers perspective. the first one from the Pentagon and the second from the soldiers). In the first article I found out that the Pentagon is controlling the media, and creating propagandas to justify war (making it biased). The article it evensays that they are trying to “win” the human terrain, meaning to influence the perception of what is really happening. As stated in the article, they have used 4.7 billion dollars in publicity for the war. If we know look at the second article which is written in the perspective of an American soldier, we can see how it is criticizing the American government for trying to deceive the people. Heeven calls this media propaganda nonsense. The American military cannot stop human rights abuses, their mission is to protect their constitution against armed enemies, they are not the policemen of the world.
This know leads me to me knowledge issue which is to what extent is the language used in media as a way to influence knowledge in masses?
I have a particular interest in this topic due tothe fact that in my every day life I am exposed to all the propagandas and commercials that the media publicizes with the idea of me seeing it. In the last 50 years the media influence has grown exponentially with the advance of technology, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet. We live in a society that depends on informationand communication to keep moving and doing our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do. The media publicizes information with the idea of informing us about current events in the world, but can we really say the media isnt trying to persuade us?
Propaganda is said to be the art of persuasion becauseyou are persuading others that your 'side of the story' is correct. The propagandas use value claims to persuade you as they try to make their arguments the correct ones. News articles can be biased because their goals is to inform the people of only what they WANT to be informed. We learn from the world, from the perspective of the media. Our knowledge is gained through what we read and see inTV. The media influences our perception and our opinion on certain matters. The media uses authority as an evidence for knowledge. When reading an article or newspaper, we always suppose that a reliable source is the once that publicizes it, therefore we accept is as reality therefore knowledge. We have put our trust on the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education....
