the earthquake ocurred don Monday, january 25 of 1999 in the Quindio departament. The epicenter was located 17 km southof Armenia, the capital of this department, had a magnitude of 6.2. It was the strongest earthquake to strike colombia for twenty years.
The main economic activity of the región, the Colombiancoffe industry was heavily affected, much coffe farms were completely destroyed and much structures of several kinds of enterprises and industries were damaged and were for long time out of service.
Thepresident not only declared economic and social state of emergency but for the first time in colombian history declared an ecological state of emergency in the affected region.
The death tollreport was awful, poor soils and the prevalent unreinforced masonry infill wall construction were responsable for most of the casualties and damage. The hospitals were damaged and the resources was fewand the attention was very bad, the victims was moved to cities close the area.
In Armenia, the police headquarters suffered partial collapse. The fire station collapsed. The water, telephone andelectricity lines suffered severe damage. Traffic through the main access roads and airport operations were interrupted. Government buildings were evacuated. Because of these events, the first days afterthe earthquake in the city were very chaotic. For similar reasons, the emergency in other cities of the region could not be properly managed either.
The inicial earthquake produced nearly athousand people and the aftershock earthquake an indeterminate number of victims among the people trying to remove their goods from the semi-collapsed structures, it has been estimated that about 200,000people were left without shelter and homeless.
