Climate: Texas's climate varies widely, from arid in the west to humid in the east. Due to its large size, Texas is home to several different climates. There are several distinct regions within the statewhich have varying climates: Northern Plains, Trans-Pecos Region, Texas Hill Country, Piney Woods, and South Texas. Generally speaking, the eastern half of Texas is humid subtropical, while the western half is semi-arid (with some arid regions). While snowfall is more common across northern Texas than southern sections, large snowfall totals have occurred near and along the middle and upper Texascoasts.

Landforms: Along the Gulf of Mexico coastline the land is flat where bayous, bays, islands and saltwatermarshes dominate the landscape.
From there the land gently rises (central and west) into the rolling hills of the Edwards Plateau, commonly referred to as the Texas Hill Country.
In the far north the Great Plains of North America extend into the edges of the Texas Panhandle to the east of Amarillo; they're fronted in the west by the southeastern edges of the Rocky Mountains.
In the farsouthwest, flat, desert-like conditions are broken by the isolated and rugged peaks of the Davis, Guadalupe and Santiago mountains.

Origin of state's name: Based on a word usedby Caddo Indians meaning "friends". During the Spanish colonial rule, the area was officially known as the Nuevo Reino de Filipinas: La Provincia de Texas.[15] Antonio Margil de Jesús was known to be the first person to use the name in a letter to the Viceroy of Mexico in July 20, 1716.
