BERNICE AND CRISTINA: TWO LITTLE GIRLS BUT DIFFERENT AT THE SAME TIME

The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast Bernice Clasky and Cristina Moreno, two characters of the film called Spanglish, and how these two girls represent the high social class and lower-middle social class in the United States of America. First, the author will compare the two girls, pointing out thesimilarities that Bernice and Cristina have. The author will give details about the roll or the part that the girl represents in the movie. After that, the author will contrast the two girls in the physical and ideological aspects like hair, skin color, where they are from, how they talk, and more. After that, the author will contrast the two girls according to the classification of the social classes inthe United States, where these girls are classified into two different social classes. The following paragraph will describe in detail how these girls’ lifes represented the main difference between them, their different social classes. To conclude, the author will present a conclusion about the comparison and contrast of the two girls described.

Bernice and Cristina are two different girls, butthey may have some similarities. One of the similarities that they have is that they are two young girls about the same age and height. Both go to school, and also have mothers who care about them. Both girls had to move, not for the same reasons, but both moved. Bernice and Cristina are humble. Bernice is the daughter of the Clasky’s, and she has a brother. She lives with her parents, her brotherand her grandmother. During the movie, Bernice had to move to a beach house in Malibu because her parents rented it. On the other hand, Cristina used to live in Mexico only with her mother because her father left them. After a few years, Cristina and her mother moved to Los Angeles and they lived there with the favorite cousin of Cristina’s mother. But because of her mother’s job, Cristina and hermother moved to the beach house in Malibu with the Clasky family. In the movie, the last time that Cristina had to move was when her mother decided to quit her job and go back with her cousin.

Even though these two girls have some similarities, they have big differences. Bernie is physically opposite in comparison to Cristina. Bernie is fatter than Cristina. Miss Clasky has light skin, blueeyes and blond curly hair, while Miss Moreno has brown skin, dark eyes and brown straight hair. And the main difference between these two girls is that they are classified into two different social classes. Bernice is in a high class because of her parents’ jobs, which permitted the family to afford a more comfortable life than the common people. On the other hand, Cristina is from a family wholived like between middle and lower social class. It is appropriate to say that Cristina was climbing from lower class to middle class, because her mother got a new job in which she could earn more money and during the summer, Flor (Cristina’s mother) and Cristina were able to live with the Clasky family in the Malibu’s beach house.

As mentioned before, Bernice and Cristina lived in two differentsocial classes. Bernice lives in high-middle social class. According to Ramesh, “private education confers a higher position on the ladder of life” . It also means that to achieve this position the person should have the resources to get into a private school, and for Bernice this was not a problem because her father was the owner of a restaurant and her mother also earned a significant amount ofmoney. For Cristina this was not the case. She had to go to a public school because her mother did not earn enough to pay her a private school. In this case, it is visible the idea presented by Gregory in which says that “Class standing has a significant impact on chances for educational”.
