Severe obesity is one of the most important health problems in the world today. The World Health Organization currently considers obesity as a global epidemic, after smoking, is the second leadingcause of preventable death. An estimated 1.7 billion people worldwide suffer from some degree of obesity.

Obesity is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease risk has been documented inobese children. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of mortality.

In Dominican Republic are had increased the cases of obese children with heart problems and cholesterol.

The DominicanSociety of Pediatrics found that increases the number of obese and overweight children as a result of the food culture of Dominicans.

The president of the Society, Dr. Rafael Schiffino, says thatin recentmonths has been an increase in inquiries from endocrinologists, pediatricians and public hospitals, of infants who are carried by their mothers with problems related to overweight and obesity.He says the situation is causing more children with hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides and other health ailments that adults traditionally suffered.

Addto fast food, the inertia of the children with too much time on household consumption of foods high in sugar, fat and carbohydrates have become the main enemy health of children.

Says there is noclear statistics on the issue and said the increase is evident in the number of mothers who bring their children to the consultations with these problems.

Obesity is attacking the Dominican Republic.On the other hand, the Dominican Society of Cardiology says that 30% of the Dominican population suffers from hypertension and 29% obesity, and therefore recommends people to maintain a healthylifestyle through exercise and balanced diet.
