The Truman Show Journal # 4

The Truman is a movie that deals a lot with perception and shows us a world in which a character is trapped in a “reality” that is completely fake. This movie wasvery interesting since it showed how we are often mislead or just blinded by various aspects which lead us away from the truth. In this case, Truman was adopted by a TV company and his life wasbasically controlled by the director Christof. Truman had absolutely no idea that what seemed to be reality was all false. In the scene where christof is receiving calls from people outside the studio heis told that he is committing a very cruel act by forcing Truman to live the fake life he was in. to this, he replies: "What distresses you, caller, is that Truman ultimately prefers his cell, as youcall it."

I strongly disagree with this response because I think that Christof is taking for granted that Truman enjoys leaving in this place. The truth is, that Truman does not know the conditionsthat he is leaving in and because of this he can’t really have an opinion of where to live. Truman was never given the opportunity to decide where he wanted to live. He was never told that he wasn’tleaving in a true world. Throughout the show Christof has played the role of God deciding the fate of his son, Truman. It might be true that Truman lives fine in this “perfect” world that Christof hascreated for him, but he has never experienced the truth of the human race. Because he hasn’t experienced the outside world there is no way for him to prefer the cell he lives in. it is the placewhere he grew up and he has taken it as his world, his reality. This leads us to a second aspect that I want to talk about.

Another quotation that really caught my attention was when Christofsays, "We accept the reality of the world with which we're presented. It's as simple as that." Even though I don’t agree with the fact that he has done this to Truman, I have to agree in that we all...
