STRESS IS A FREQUENT phenomenon in animals it is a reponse to urgent needs or danger, and often allows animals to servive by obtaining food, defending themselves, orespaping.
in the african savannahthe tense lions and the nervous gazelles are both feeling stress prior to crucial action.
humans once lived int he same world of basic needs and dangers as animals.today, we do not usually have to hunt for food, physically defend ourselves or escape, but we still face constant stessful challenges. we create manyof them in pur minds:the worry or failing anexam, the challenge of getting good grades.
in tense situations- in the wilds of africa or in a manhattan office- stress causes the release of adrenaline into the blood. the pupils of the eyes dilate forbetter vision, breathing is more profound, and the herarts beats faster to send more oxygen and glucose to the muscles and brain. Digestion stops, memory and thinking become sharper, and the body decomesstronger, ready to respond.
when the body has time to recover from stress, there is no problem. But when the stress in constant, problems can accumulate. During periods of stress, the immune system weakensand there is a greater risk of infection. Adrenaline is toic in large quantities and arrested digestion leaves the stomach and intestines vulnerable to ulcers. Increased bllod pressure damages thecirculatory system. Some stress can produce a better perfomance, but constant stress can damage the body, and eventually kill.
