English introduction
The mine sector is without a doubt of great importance in the history of our country. The diversity and
abundance of minerals in Mexico has always been one ofthe nations mayor wealth. Currently, Mexico
continues occupying a place of privilege in the production of minerals worldwide. Mexico is first place in
silver, celestite, and bismth; second place in fluorite; fourth place in arsenic, cadmium, and graphite; fifth
place in zinc; and sixth place in lead and salt. The mine workers, who on a regular basis invest their lives to
discover the goods ofthe center of the earth, are a great example of the Mexican strong will for progress.
Mining has represented a rich treasure for Mexico since its history is intimately connected to the extraction
of silver and other minerals especially for the coin minting.
The antecedents of mining begin in the Prehispanic and the Colony Eras and aftermath in the first half of the
XIX century. It includesthree main historic moments: 1) The Porfiriato, period where the mining main
elements are defined and a new physiognomy of activities in Mexico is established. 2) The Revolution
Movement of 1910 and the Constitution of 1917, that include the legal foundations to regulate and determine
the mining activity during this century. 3) The crisis of 1929, severely affecting the Mexican mining and
openingthe door to the need to create institutions and instruments to apply a national policy to support such
activity.
The height of the mining activity took place during the last two years of the XIX century and the first years of
the XX century, after a long hold up period. The economic crisis of the United States also affected Mexico,
being reflected especially in the mining sector. In 1929, themining sector was one of the main industries in
the country that generated 10% of the GIP (Gross Internal Product) becoming the first exporting activity; the
production of electricity energy consumption represented the 26% of the total and the third part of the freight
